Sigh…After the news of the Chinese milk scandal, I am afraid of milk and almost all dairy products which is my favorite (such as chocolates, biscuits…And even vegetables imported from China also suspect contain high level of melamine (NST 04/10/2008)…
What is this melamine actually? Well, it is actually a type of organic compound that is often combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin, a synthetic polymer which is fire resistant and heat tolerant. Melamine is added to milk to make it to appear to be high protein food. Melamine was making headline in 2007 due to its contamination of pet foods. By 22 September 2008, nearly 53,000 illnesses, over 12,800 hospitalizations, and four infant deaths had been reported, caused by kidney stones and other renal failure due to high content of melamine in milk powder.
This is the latest Malaysia’s Safe Products List published by Food Safety and Quality Division (FSQ), Ministry of Health (in pdf format) on 06/10/2008.
