Mooncake- Diversified Style And Taste

Mooncake festival or Chinese Mid Autumn Festival is around the corner and you can see mooncakes being sold everywhere culminating in the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations which takes place on Sept 25 this year (2007).There are lots of different mooncakes with varies of flavors to suit people from all walk of lives. I, personally prefer crystal skin mooncakes, especially sold by The Baker’s Cottage (Halal).

Did you know that people who are particular about mooncake would go for The Baker’s Cottages’  (or maybe just me)? One morning when I was shopping for mooncake, there I was at the mooncake promotion area, where there was only a Kam Lun Tai promoter. I wasn’t very interested in them as they don’t suit my taste. The promoted intially approached me and ask me to try some of hers. I made up my mind, I wanted Baker’s Cottages’. I responded to the promoter and told her that I was interested in The Bakers’ Cottages’ only, whose promoter isn’t there yet. I was thinking maybe it’s just me. Then came another couple, and went right to The Baker’s Cottages’ store as well. And another, and another… It probably is selling itself better than the Kam Lun Tai promoter.

But, this year, one of my friends gave me mooncakes that are made from jelly/agar-agar. Maybe it’s new and I haven’t try this before =). It really taste so yummy.

The skin is made from agar-agar,the yellowish paste is made from corn. Not too sweet…It is a must for those who love corn!!!

This is my favourite. The red bean paste made solely from red bean, reddish colour; different from commercial one (almost black colour). Must eat chilled!!!

This one is from The Baker’s Cottage, cheesy crystal skin mooncake.

This one is from The Baker’s Cottage also, rasberry cheese mooncake.

As you can see, the competition in this food industry has created a great diversification of style and taste. Unlike in the days of my parents, they are all brown inside and brown outside. No color and taste the same. These days you can probably shop for mooncakes and eat for one full month and still find it hard to eat up every type of mooncake in the market. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but the mooncakes here, surely reflects more of the way of Malaysias, colorful always.
